Killed for being Hoale
July 2, 2008 8:04 pm Hawaii News
In the movie Blue Crush a Pro Bowl quarterback is jumped for being Haole (or a foreigner to Hawaii and pronounced How-lee). He takes his licks and moves on. In real life, people have been killed in Hawaii for being Haole. Just this week a 22-year old thug goes to trial for killing a 34-year old man and potential law school student at the University of Hawaii. Why did Christopher Reuther have to die less than 24 hours after visiting Hawaii? Because he was racially profiled and attacked. His crime? Being white and on a beach typically researched for locals. The Star Bulletin covers the story here.
The case is pretty cut and dry. Christopher Reuther was visiting Hawaii to go to law school. He made the mistake of camping out at Nanakuli Beach Park on the west side of Oahu. After a short time he was confronted by thug Less Schnabel Jr who waited until Reuther was turned to sucker punch him, putting him into a comma. Reuther died a few days after his injuries. What did Schabel do after cowardly punching a man? Well, like a common thug steal stuff from Reuther’s rental car.
There are two disturbing parts to this story. First, thug Schnabel committed a similar crime when he was younger, except the man didn’t die. Due to the liberal Hawaii court system he was on the street to repeat his crime this time killing a man. Second, outside of Hawaii this story is not being covered. If it were a white cop killing a black man I’m sure it would be front news for weeks. Since Reuther was white crimes like this don’t get the attention or justice it deserves. This case is a hate crime and a murder. But since it happened in Hawaii it is being tried as a manslaughter case. Despicable to say the least! As reported by the Star Buletin, here are the events that lead up to this murder:
Reuther, 34, was in Hawaii for a visit and to attend a law school orientation. He arrived in the afternoon. That evening he went to Germaine’s Luau at Campbell Industrial Park. At 11 p.m., he was at Nanakuli Beach Park.
Harold Kaeo, who was camping with six friends at Zablan Beach, testified that he noticed when Reuther arrived in his red Ford Mustang convertible rental car. He said Reuther looked out of place.
“It was unusual to see somebody like that in a place like that,” Kaeo said, “A typical tourist wouldn’t be there.”
He said he and his friends invited Reuther to their tent and asked him whether he would like to smoke some marijuana. And after getting to know him, they invited Reuther to pitch his tent next to theirs.
Because they regarded parts of the beach park dangerous, Kaeo said, he and his friends told Reuther to stay near their tent. But he said Reuther did not listen.
Reuther left the tent and was headed to the parking lot wearing his camera when he encountered Schnabel, Kaeo said. He said Schnabel struck a pose, raising the middle finger of both hands, inviting Reuther to take his picture, which Reuther did.
But Kaeo sensed trouble - “because in my eyes, it looked like a typical setup,” Kaeo said.
So he called out to Schnabel’s companion and told her not do anything stupid and to leave Reuther alone.
Wong, the deputy city prosecutor, said Schnabel’s companion, Nicole Ako, will testify that Reuther took another picture of Schnabel, which upset Schnabel. He said Ako also will testify that Schnabel told Reuther to leave the park but that Reuther did not leave quickly enough.
Loy, the defense attorney, said Ako was too high on crystal methamphetamine that night to remember what happened and too far away to have heard Schnabel’s supposed last words to Reuther.
Kaeo said he watched as Reuther walked to the parking lot and opened the trunk of his car. He said Schnabel came up from behind Reuther, and when Reuther turned around, Schnabel hit him with a punch Kaeo called a “button shot.” He said Reuther spun around, took a few steps and then fell to the ground.
Reuther died and thug Schnabel rummaged through his car and left. Hopefully, justice is served in this case! Sadly, this attack is no uncommon in Hawaii. Just last year an Army soldier who spent two tours in Iraq and his wife were beaten unconsious for a minor car accident.
Last month’s road-rage incident began when an SUV driven by Army Staff Sgt. Andrew Dussell, 26, who has served two tours in Iraq, struck the parked car of Gerald Paakaula, 44, at a shopping center, according to a police affidavit filed in court. Paakaula and his 16-year-old son allegedly assaulted Dussell and his wife, Dawn, 23.
The teenager allegedly shouted an obscenity along with the Hawaiian term for a white person, haole (pronounced “howl-ee”), while attacking the soldier.
The court document says the father, a truck driver, picked up the woman and slammed her to the asphalt. The teenager allegedly kicked the husband’s face as he convulsed on the ground from a punch to the throat. The couple suffered broken noses, facial fractures and concussions.
In another incident Jan. 27, nine white campers in a beach park on the Big Island of Hawaii were beaten by men in their 20s who told the campers to leave the island, the police report says. Hawaii County Police Maj. John Dawrs describes the assailants as “Pacific Islanders.”
Racism is alive in well in Hawaii, but unless you live here you likely have not heard about any of these crimes.

Reuther, 34, was in Hawaii for a visit and to attend a law school orientation. He arrived in the afternoon. That evening he went to Germaine’s Luau at Campbell Industrial Park. At 11 p.m., he was at Nanakuli Beach Park.

Good article.IF Reuther wanted weed, and IF he took two pictures of Schnabel, and IF Reuther didn’t leave soon enough–he still should NOT have been murdered. Schnabel has no defense. His cruelty and callousness are Hawaii’s poison.

FIRST off, Schnabel shouldnt have done what he’s done already. SECOND, this is not a HATE crim. THIRD, everyone was on drugs, why hang around???????????

It is a hate crime if you are attacked solely based on your race, religion or other factors. If he were local he would be alive today. He was white so he is dead. That pretty much defines a hate crime; an attack on another human being because they are different and you don’t like their race.

Schnabel committed a similar act when barely a juvenile (17) bashing in the face of an unsuspecting man, Cameron Gernhard in 2002, knocking out his left eyeball, fracturing the socket, his face and the end result is a steel plate in his face and disfigurement for life. The victim can walk with assistance. The key witness, threatened by Schnabel, moved to the mainland. She is of Hawai’ian descent, raised on O’ahu, her O’hana still lives there and called KITV’s Mahalani Richardson for an on-air interview after hearing about Chris Reuther.
After the murder, it was announced that Schnabel was to have been arraigned on 2nd degree murder charges. However, that was downgraded immediately to Manslaughter 1st degree. His bail was set at $150,000 but that was downgraded to $50,000. It is clear that some type of deal was cut for him. Nicole Ako, Schnabel’s friend and witness, is serving time for being a crystal meth dealer. Did Schnabel turn her in? He went to crystal meth rehab as reported by the Hawai’ian newspapers.
Schnabel’s reduced $50,000 bail was the same bail set shortly thereafter for his father who stole a portable storage unit. Schnabel, Sr. remains in jail.
7/10/08 Schnabel received the guilty verdict. However, it is on video tape on KITV where Judge Thomas Town asks Schnabel to “try to be good even though it is difficult” and to “go straight home” to await sentencing on September 10th.
Judge Town should not be hearing criminal cases. He is a judge who self-admittedly claims his focus is on judicial burn out, judicial resiliency and caring for judges physically, spiritually and psychologically. He lectures and writes books on these topics. He said that judges are “coaches” and puts great emphasis upon rehabilitative probation. HE WOULD NOT LET THE RECORDS OF SCHNABEL’S PREVIOUS MAIMING ATTACK BE ENTERED AS EVIDENCE! Admitting juvenile records as evidence in a subsequent case is standard procedure according to my local legal advisor.
Judge Town is not fit to serve and Gov. Lingle is not fit to govern. She had the beaches cleared in 2006 but, then did nothing to support it or back it up. No arrests were made, curfews were ignored and the beaches were allowed to “remain open” to drug pushers and users.
Our friends in Hawai’i are outraged and rightly so! The state is deteriorating quickly.
There was a report yesterday, 7/16, from O’ahu that Schnabel hit yet another unsuspecting person with a beer bottle. Apparently, that is being hushed up so Judge Town can “save face.” Either that or the Leeward Boyz are under Schnabel’s complete control and are very, very afraid of him.
In a recent interview, Mrs. Judy Wilson, Chris’ mother, stated that Chris had erased the photo. Actually there were two photos according to witness testimony. One Schnabel invited to be taken with the middle fingers of each hand extended. Another witness, Kaeo, stated that he knew this was a set up.
Chris Reuther was killed with a martial-arts-type punch delivered behind the ear. The Medical Examiner testified that it could have only been delivered from behind.
Another witness, Nicole Ako, came forward one week later after the murder, the day that what was left of Chris’ body was to be cremated and shipped home, the day after Chris’ family visited the spot where he died and began to ask questions of the locals when they were throwing leis they had brought to the beach into the ocean. The family told locals that Chris had died. Several looked shocked and left immediately.
Ako gave an interview that essentially stated that Reuther was leaving but, did not leave quickly enough. This was also her sworn statement during the trial.
THERE HAS BEEN A TRAVESTY OF JUSTICE HERE! SOME ARE CALLING IT A HATE CRIME BECAUSE THE WITNESSES REFER TO CHRISTOPHER REUTHER AS “HAOLE.” OTHERS SEE HIS DEATH AS FURTHER BREAKDOWN OF LAW IN HAWAI’I. NO ENFORVEMENT OF RULES, NO FINES, NO PRISON TIME, NO PUNISHMENT FOR MURDER, NO JUDGES IN THE REAL SENSE, NO GOVERNMENT AND NO JUDGEMENT FOR THE GUILTY. AS FAR AS SCHNABEL’S PREVIOUS RECORDS, THEY SHOULD HAVE BEEN ADMITTED.
NOW, IN SEPTEMBER, JUDGE (I USE THE TERM VERY LOOSELY) TOWN WILL PROBABLY GIVE SCHNABEL 10 YEARS PROBATION FOR WHAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN MURDER 2ND DEGREE TO BEGIN WITH. LETTING SCHNABEL WALK OUT OF THE COURTROOM TO AWAIT SENTENCING IS FULL INDICATION OF THAT.
Chris Reuther was an environmental journalist and professional photographer with a heart for the poor, marginalized and the environment. He wrote about Pacific Islanders and how their fragile ecosystems are endangered as well as their livelihoods. Google “Christopher Reuther” and you will see a huge body of works. Also, you can search “Environmental Health Prespectives” the award-winning governmental trade magazine that Chris worked for. Though brilliant, he was trusting, open, respectful and even childlike. His niece and nephew called him “Kid Uncle.” Chris said he never planned to be wealthy; he wanted to serve all mankind and the planet by going as far as he could within the environmental justice system to wage war against inhaled pollution, lead poisioning, homogenous cancers i.e., breast cancer, etc. and his concerns were for the toxic pollutants that are already appearing in breast milk and children’s bodies at alarming levels.
Chris was accepted to Tullane’s Environmental Law School and to the William S. Richardson School of Environmental Law School. Chris was devoted to becoming a judge and climb up as far as he could within the governmental judicial system in order to champion the environment, our future, the next generations future and slow the decay of our beautiful planet. It is so ironic that his memory was betrayed by a judge.
He was very excited about his decision. The last time he came home Chris said for the first time in his life, he was very, very happy with himself and this important decision.
I think about him every day. I say Chris is gone to make myself understand. It is still a shock.
It is unfair he was “manslaughtered” and that his killer walks free.
It is a travesty of justice that has happened to the good people of Hawai’i who must live with this menance, Schnabel, and others like him who are on the same path to destruction of life and property.
Christopher Reuther was a good, loving and responsible man who did and would have continued to do great things. Everyone one has tried to bring him down to the level of a druggie and derelict in order to protect themselves from Schnabel and further their sick, sick subculture.
It is bad enough that Chris’ life was taken but for the judicial and ultimately the Governer of Hawai’i to side with these sad people is the ultimate slap in the face of Lady Justice! God help them!

Terrible article by Straight Talk. It is filled with too many lies.
Chris Reuther was not racially profiled. Less Schnabel is half white and has a white grandfather who he has a great relationship with.
Chris Reuther was not sucker punched. The only witness there at the time of the punch testified that Chris Reuther was the aggressor and charged at Less Schnabel. Less Schnabel defended himself with one left handed punch that knocked Chris Reuther out. The medical examiner never testified that Less Schnabel’s punch was what caused the death.
Less Schnabel did not steal anything from Chris Reuther’s belongings. Nothing was missing from Chris Reuther’s car, even the expensive camera that was in plain view.
There were no reports on July 16th of Less Schnabel hitting anyone with a beer bottle. This is a complete lie made up to damage the image of Less Schnabel.
Hawaiians will never ever come close to commiting the hundreds of millions of racist based murders that white people are responsible for in our past.
Hawaii is as strong as ever!!

Remnant,
Everything Straight Talk posted is what I read in the papers as well. Last I look the jury came back with a guilty verdict as well.
Chris Reuther was not profiled? So, if he was Hawaiian or looked local, would Schnabel even have noticed him on the beach?
The only witness that testified that Chris attacked Schnabel was a friend of Schnabel. What is next, a CEO of Philip Morris is a good witness that smoking is good for you?
Maybe your should study your history on Hawaiian culture. Last I looked a Hawaiian King killed hundreds on Pali lookout because they wouldn’t be “unified”. Not sure Hawaiians have a better history that any other race. I would agree with you if you said human race instead of whites. But it does show what you think of whites.

It’s not because he was “white” I’m 99% possitively sure that even if it was a “brown skinned” person to arrive at the beach something possibly could’ve happened if that person was “unknown”. I don’t agree with what Schnabel has done but I also don’t agree with everyone creating this whole nonsense around “racism”. Seriously, it’s very annoying! If you were in Chris’s shoes, would you honestly head out to the beaches alone after coming from a luau all intoxicated on the West side of O’ahu? I know how much everyone that’s not from the West side wouldn’t even come this way during the day where theres sunlight. Anyways I just wanted to comment my opinion of everyone calling it a “race crime” bunch of dorks!

I am born and raised in Hawaii. In fact I was born in waianae, and attended maili elementary until the 5th grade.
For anyone to say this is not a hate crime, is so unbelievable. This is a blatant case of “locals” vs “haoles”, and the fact that meth was involved made it all the worse. Through out my entire life as a young Hawaiian woman, I have witnessed tons and tons of racism geared toward people from the mainland.
A man was killed. Because of our ignorance, and our own stubborn ways. We are not teaching our children to just accept the fact that Hawaii no longer belongs to just Hawaiian people. No, we teach them to resent and hate change, even though if it weren’t for that change, we would probably be way worse off than being a part of the greatest nation in the world.
He was MURDERED in cold blood, and that meth addict gets to live another day in paradise, free to roam until he murders another person making wonderful and great contributions to our world. Why? I don’t believe any person should be the judge of who should live or die, but what will schnabel possibly contribute to this world besides sadness and pain? Meanwhile the man who is dead wouldve brought so much goodness to everyone he touched.
And on that same note, I don’t care if you go to kalihi in the dead of night with a 10000 dollar Gucci bag, you haven’t done anything wrong. You may be asking for trouble, but you certainly don’t DESERVE it for being there. The person who maliciously attacks you is the one who is reponsible. Let’s not split hairs about who is the bad guy here just because someone is in the wrong place at night. Its a free country as long as you don’t infringe on another mans rights, youre good.
So who is wrong here? Chris reuther for being somewhere, or schnabel for murdering him? Hmm…

I haven’t lived in Hawaii since the 1970’s and these types of assaults happened all the time. Some were published in the press, but most were not so as not to scare away tourists!
I’m glad Hawaii hasn’t changed.
Has anyone noticed that a “non-haole” son of Hawaii is now the President-Elect of the United States?

Grew up on the big island. Tormented my whole life there–from having my hand held over a Bunsen burner in 8th grade science to being spit on and thrown down stairs, to having my underwear pulled down in halls, to getting my face pushed into my lunch plate and having knives held to my throat–all in the presence and presumably with the approval of the “adults” in authority. That’s what destroys you–If the adults think you deserve it you obviously do.
A haole friend went to a teacher for help when we were 8th grade kids; he raped her. She dropped out. I became dissociative (what some refer to as a split personality) and just left my body when it got to be too much. When we moved to LA I had to take classes over because I had no recollection of 8th grade. I finally remembered some of my school years after being treated for PTSD. By a VA shrink who said he’d never had a Viet Nam patient who’d been more damaged than I was. White girls are being destroyed over there to this day and no one in Hilo cares enough to stop it. One day some girl is going to go Columbine and she’ll have my blessing. Hope she gets them all. Then maybe things will change.

The racism doesnt piss me off as much as the people who deny that it exists in Hawaii. As if it’s immune to it. Ignorance breeds hate and fear. And Hawaii has A LOT of it, just like any other state or country. Why deny it??

I was considering moving to the islands and employing some locals for my internet lead generating businesses. I believe the economy is going to get much worst before it gets better. On that note, I feel the natives will be getting more restless and looking for scapegoats.
I have seen marine get his face crushed in on some brick steps one time in Oahu. The local guy went up to him and just beat the shit out of him for no reason. The marine did not even see it coming. I thought to myself (20 years ago)that I had just seen “racism” at it’s core, and it left a “fucked up” feeling about the islands and it’s “aloha” spirit.
I agree with the natives. All the hoale’s need to get the fuck of there islands. Let them wake up and see that the reason for there anger is not the color of someone’s skin but the condition of there heart.
Let some other nation take them over and see if life is better for them. I am not pro US. I am an American citizens and feel the real leaders pulling the strings, think of all of us as “useless eaters”.
This is a human condition, and for some reason, your creator allowed the species to go on with a bent towards evil (nature)? We are all in this game and no where to run. Wake up you dumb shits and start working together and realize the real “enemy within”.
I am forced to spend my time on martial arts training and working with guns, because of this evil that exist. The people (in all the world) that play “victim” need to understand that you are hurt children and you want a hug! Get over it, and just asked. Quite spewing your hate onto people to get it off yourself. I will be the first person to give you a hug (if you ask)
In the meantime, I will learn my skills to protect myself in this godforsaken world. I realized that a very small minority of the people reading this will even have the wisdom to understand my rant. If you would like to learn, do some research on “narcism” and the 3 traits a person is acting on. (rescuer, perpetrator, and “victim”)
ps. I know about this as I was once a big narcissist. It is not your fault how you got there, however if you stay there - it is your fault!)

[…] The stink eye is far more serious than a mere "dirty look." It’s a cultural thing, almost instinctive. Have you ever noticed how dogs growl before attacking? How rattle snakes rattle before biting their predators? Well it’s the same for Hawaiians here. The stink eye is a warning. "Continue staring and i’ll give you one lickin’" or "You’re white, go back to da mainland." or "STINK EYE." When someone gives you the stink eye here, it’s either well deserved…or brought on purely by the extreme dislike for "haoles" and tourists. It’s a warning. It’s not in good fun. It’s not a joke. It’s serious. And if you don’t believe me…come here and try it on someone. You’ll regret it. I hate living here. You would too. And i’m not even white. Killed for being Hoale | Hawaii Topia […]

If you dont know your history of a place, you better be careful. Hawaiians have been raped and pillaged of their rights, lands, and most of all the exploitation of their culture. So when you buy your ticket to visit there. You are supporting everything Hawaiians are against. Just a little warning… RESPECT who you talk to and where you are at. ALOHA and welcome to the only ILLEGALLY OVERTHROWN STATE OF THE USA. that would give someone a reason to hate “haoles”

Living here in Lubbock, Texas, we see a lot of Mexican nationals, and hear a lot of Spanish being spoken at businesses, schools, etc. Despite that, it’s pretty rare to see anything but an occasional ‘evil eye’ by the Americans - but that’s where it stops. I don’t see ‘hate crimes’ or beatings by the ‘bible thumpers’ that live here. Hawaii on the other hand, and the natives there, sound pretty much like hate-filled a-holes. A Krakatoa type event in the Hawaiin chain sounds like it is well deserved there.

I lived in Hawaii for awhile and found that there are two types of people there. The cool Hawaiians are some of the friendliest people I have ever met. The others are the worst people I have ever met. They have no regard for themselves or anything around them. They smoke ice, steal and litter all over the country they want to take back for their own. I have a deep respect for Hawaiian culture, the warrior mentality and the true meaning of aloha. The person mentioned above has none of those characteristics. He and all of those other ice heads could burn in hell for all I care. For the rest of the Hawaiian nation, I have nothing but respect for your land and culture .

For “Just some words for thought”:
So Hawaiians are against tourist dollars?
I don’t think so! If it weren’t for that, Hawaii would be one of the poorest states in the nation, and it would be even harder than it is now to afford anything over there.
Would you really want to go back to the “good ole days” and live on bananas and coconuts your entire life?
Would you really prefer that Hawaii not have joined the U.S., and be without the support of her military protection? Perhaps you would have preferred Chinese occupation, or give the Russians a crack at you, because if Hawaii hadn’t become a state, you can be sure some other country would have LOVED to take it over, and I am sure the Hawaiians would have thoroughly enjoyed life under them!
Are you from Hawaii, in which case I didn’t know there were so many ignorant people there, or are you an American Indian, some still whining about the colonists coming here as they enjoy their air-conditioned houses and all the benefits of living in the greatest country in the world, America!

A hate crime? Now all you white people are concerned about getting beaten as you walk down the road. But when black people were being brutally beaten, killed, and massacred on the streets by white people it didn’t bother many of you then. Now its a problem that your being attacked. Like they say you get what you deserve. Its karma. No matter where you go in this world you’ll always run in to bad people. Like when people from Hawaii go to the mainland its the same thing. Just because many of the tourist come here and can’t defend themselves it doesn’t make the crime any worse then if it were in the mainland. People are just looking for reasons to attack Hawaii because its such a beautiful place, you couldn’t imagine anything bad happening here. Like I said there are bad people every where not just in Hawaii. This had nothing to do with race it was just one guy being stupid. Don’t define Hawaii as racism because of one bad apple. Rest in peace Christoper . There is no reason for your death and the world is a sadder place for it. Having grown up in Waianae I can attest to the fact that there are many of my people(Hawaiian)who have fell into the hell hole of drug abuse. For most its a daily struggle to get and use drugs by whatever means. They rob and hurt all they come in contact with. The fortunate seek treatment the rest recicve it when they’re incarcerated. Of those even less make it back to society with the majority living a life going in and out of prison. Those few will always prey upon others and make the news. This problem occures everywhere and until the laws and treatment work in unison things will remain the same. This is not an issue to be confused with the fight for Soverenty or against Racism. That fight will never end until truth and justice is provided to the Hawaiian Nation.

Justice for Chris Reuther and death penalty to that racist Hawaiian! I’m the manager of Pearl Harbor Recycling and I don’t hire Hawaiians because they hate so much, always late, and they’re all lazy! I’d rather hire Blacks or Mexicans, at least they do the job done not like those Lazy Hawaiians. Also, shame on them for blaming the USA for taking their lands away, it’s actually their own queen’s fault and if you hate us Whites and the USA then stop wearing American clothing, using our electronics, eating American food, and American cars. Go back to grass huts, wear grass skirts, and play bowling with coconuts!

ho get plenny retarded comments on here yah? some from each “side”, but i must say, appears most from “locals” weakly defending and justifying the decades history of targeting Caucasians for bias, racial slurs, and physical attack. pretty fricken embarrassing if also disgusting. denial. in regards to the often cited sovereignty thing, what the heck that got to do with a freakin modern day murder? unrelated to this incident, i might take the sovereignty movement a little more seriously if people started dropping the slurpees and McD’s from one hand and the iphones from the other and actually made some serious moves to develop some communities or lifestyles that reject the technologies from the cultures they justifiably or not claim to be such victims of. come on…seriously, how bout walk that talk. after doing quite a bit of browsing on the subject of racism in Hawaii, i must say the comments i see from the majority of “locals” is disappointing, sad, and to be blunt, gives a very ignorant… no not ignorant…. but stupid impression.
to those who have left more thoughtful comments, from whichever viewpoint, keep the faith in humanity as it exists in these islands. i know i am trying.

Hawaii is full of hate and racism. Much more than anywhere on the mainland. For a small population, there is a huge percentage of people that are hate-filled, angry, violent, drug addicted and extremely racist.
